gathering inspo

I was able to dig up some really cool examples and present them to the creative director.

Develop Static Concepts & narrow down

When I started designing these frames, I began to realize how hard it was to wrap my head around working on a piece at this scale. It was also difficult to present ideas at the very large format. So I decided to break the long pieces into sections, and to repeat those sections throughout the full banner. These sections made it easier to present what was going on.

I developed five static concepts, or style frames, to be presented to the creative director. We were quickly approaching the deadline, so I was told to go all in on the Fun Sports theme. Additional feedback was to try to add the website’s URL in there somewhere. Static style frames can be viewed below.

Animate the chosen direction

As I mentioned earlier, it was difficult to present ideas at this scale. Now came the real headache of coordinating the movements of these sectioned-out pieces. I was lucky to stumble upon a company’s Instagram page (colosseum.company) that specializes in this type of work. They share their processes in assembling files as scale and building comps to show what is going on with each piece throughout the stadium.

I piggy-backed of their process and got to animating. See below:

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM

When, we went headed up to Engergizer Park to see the banners in person, we came across some issues:

  • The white text on the green background was difficult to see in day-time-sun conditions

  • The soccer ball was also difficult to see on the green background

So the solution was to simplify the animation and use as much contrast as possible. This would also maximize visibility in day-time-sun conditions. See the final version below:

last steps

Last steps for this project (other than reanimating, reexporting, and repackaging all files) were to get sign off from company stakeholders. Then, go and check out the graphics one more time at the stadium.
